History of the Site

On February 29th the final pieces of the historic Lunenburg Foundry & Engineering lands were purchased by a trio of Nova Scotia companies.

The location of these lands allows for a development to be potentially transformational for the town of Lunenburg. Located at one of the busiest intersections of the town, where public amenities meet private residences and the working waterfront meets a commercial main street; what ultimately occurs with the land will undoubtedly affect the community positively.

The Lunenburg Foundry has moved and is still in operation under new ownership, Seaway Fabrications Ltd. Lunenburg Foundry is known around the world for its know-how in creating beautifully cast propellers and bronze fittings for the marine industry. The company’s distinguished history has had a huge impact on maritime culture. The Foundry once employed nearly 500 people while they were a crucial production facility during World War II. It’s notable branded products like the Atlantic Engine, Fisherman and Lady Scotia stoves were some well-known and widely impactful locally crafted creations.

The Foundry has operated for over a century on its historic grounds in Town of Lunenburg under ownership of a group of local shareholders. It has employed hundreds of locals in trades from patternmaking, fabrication, marine fitting to engine production. Recognizing the need for change, the former owners have been divesting of the lands and industry but have been proactive in ensuring the Foundry legacy continues in the capable hands of others. There were numerous affiliated companies including Lunenburg Marine Railway Company and Heritage Harbour Developments Limited.

The historic lands of the Lunenburg Foundry Plant I are located in the heart of Lunenburg at a cross roads of where old town meets new town, commercial meets industrial and private housing meets public amenity. These important lands are meaningful to the community writ large and this fact is not lost on the developing agency.
